HEADDRESS MAKING WITH BIG QUEEN RITA DOLLIS

June 16 & 17, July 14 & 15

Big Queen Rita Dollis is overjoyed to lead a headdress-making class that utilizes Masking Indian skills & techniques. Campers will use feathers, gemstones, glitter strips, and more to construct personalized pieces to take home! She encourages all young artists to arrive comfortably so they can remain engaged with this captivating class!

MEET THE INSTRUCTOR:

Big Queen Laurita "Rita" Dollis (she/her) is a renowned figure in Black Masking Indian Culture, serving for over 35 years as the Big Queen of the Wild Magnolias. As the wife of the late, legendary Big Chief Bo Dallis, she transitioned from sewing suits to pioneering leadership, breaking tradition and reshaping the culture. Rita Dollis has had her handmade suits displayed in museums around the city, such as the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane and JAMNOLA. She is thrilled to share her artistic techniques with a new generation of artists.

CREATIVE MINIATURES WITH PHOEBE GRACE

June 23 & 24, July 21 & 22

JAMNOLA honors the important people, places, and parts of New Orleans in both massive and miniature installations. We will explore the larger and smaller-than-life exhibits at the museum, and how scale changes the art and our experiences of it. Then we will make our own miniatures to honor a place that is special to us, inspired by the miniature iconic buildings and venues memorialized at JAMNOLA.

MEET THE INSTRUCTOR:

Phoebe Grace (she/her) is a mixed media artist and art teacher based in New Orleans. She makes site-specific & interactive sculptural work, paintings, quilts, drawings, and tattoos within her art practice. She has been teaching art to children, adults, and families since 2021. She currently teaches at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts and offers free art classes at the Fred Hampton Free Store. Phoebe is especially interested in public art that connects the community.

PARASOL DECORATING WITH HEIDI JO TAYLOR

July 7 & 8, July 29 & 30

To honor New Orleans heritage (and JAMNOLA’s one-of-kind second line), campers will be guided through a parasol decorating class. We will brainstorm the many ways sustainable materials can transform blank canvases—honoring how we celebrate ourselves, our communities, and our culture. Students will decorate their parasols using sustainable materials such as bottle caps, bubble wrap, cardboard, fruit nets and more to transform their parasol into a one-of-a-kind work of art. The day ends with a parasol fashion show!

MEET THE INSTRUCTOR:

Heidi Jo Taylor (she/her) is an energetic storyteller and multi-media artist. With a special focus on creating art from found materials, she believes in cultivating a fun and safe space where young artists can explore their imaginations sustainably. Heidi loves constructing hands-on projects that encourage students to take creative risks and embrace their unique artistic voices! If you’ve visited JAMNOLA before, you may have seen a parasol or two crafted by Heidi; her most popular one utilized repurposed, royal purple Mardi Gras beads as decoration!
