Tigermen, July 22 - 26: Parade Camp

225.00

Ages 5 - 14

Mardi Gras comes early for our Parade Camp kids! In this workshop, students learn about the different ways carnival is celebrated in New Orleans and around the world and create their own parade. At the beginning of the week, students vote on a theme and name for their Krewe. Students then split up into sub-krewes based on their interests. Each sub-krewe makes coordinated costumes, throws and banners. Campers also have the option to make large scale “Reveler” puppets. Both Parade Camp at Tigermen and Float Making Camp at Art Klub come together for the Friday Parade. Come out and catch some throws!

CATE SWAN is a multi-disciplinary artist who has been living and working in New Orleans for the last 10 years.  From the moment she was exposed to her first Mardi Gras parade in 2007, she was hooked on the history and performative mechanism of parading.  She has been an active member and leader of a sub-krewe in Chewbacchus for the last 4 years, where she has built contraptions, costumes, and throws.  She’s marched in a variety of parades with dance krewes and bands over the years, from Krewe du Vieux to Red Beans to Krewe of Boo. What she hopes to contribute to Parade Camp is her experience and devotion to Mardi Gras history and traditions, as well as honoring the past culture bearers of this city and encouraging new ones.

Behind the scenes at Parade Camp 2018!

This year our Neighborhood Partners at She Comes in Peace will be teaching the kids how to do professional makeup and face paint for parade day! We’re so excited to learn from these awesome stylists!
